July 02 Uncle Jeremy's MustacheFor those of you who didn't know, my daddy's brother, Uncle Jeremy works for FoxSports. When he's on camera, he produces very serious segments on the side of sports that not many people talk about. Check out this quick video he stars in about Baseball's Best Mustaches! Baseball's Best Mustaches June 26 It's Not Easy Being Greenby Sharon Over the last few years, Matt and I have made an effort to lessen our carbon footprint and be nicer to the planet. On a weekly basis our recycling bin is overflowing while the trash can is at most half full. We compost (most) of our food and yard waste. Our washer/dryer are high efficiency and all laundry is done with warm or cold water. The light bulbs in our house are all the new fancy ones that won't have to be replaced until long after we move out of here. We keep our house cool by opening windows and turning fans on full blast (though there are definitely days we wish we had A/C). I don't even use those pretty paper napkins in our guest bathroom, instead we have a basket full of wash cloths that I am constantly washing... We avoid plastic water bottles, instead drinking out of glasses while home and recycling the bottles we keep in our cars/diaper bag/office. Point being, we try. Yes, we drive gas guzzlers but we don't drive much, heck I don't even leave a five mile radius most days...We eat local and organic as much as possible, blah blah blah. Why am I going on and on about this? Because having a kid has totally and completely messed with my being (semi)green and it annoys me. Before Jamie was born, I looked into the idea of cloth diapers. As soon as I changed my first poopy diaper that went out the window. Ok, maybe I won't use cloth on my little one's butt but what about chlorine free or biodegradable inserts. Yeah no, they don't fit. All my kid's butt fits are the horrible for mother earth, chemically laden diapers. To top it off, everywhere you go, you have to wrap all diapers in a plastic bag before throwing it in the trash, sanitation reasons or something. Next up, traveling. Thanks to all the lovely rules imposed by the TSA and in an attempt to keep things clean and organized, I am the queen of ziplock. This wouldn't be so bad except most places don't recycle plastic bags and there wasn't exactly room in my suitcase to schlep them back home then drive them to Target for recycling. Another pet peeve, kids toys that require D batteries. Every single gadget this kiddo has requires D batteries. The swing, his bouncy seat, the music/lights part of his activity mat... D batteries are not rechargable and it is really hard to find a place that recycles bateries. The only place I know of around here that recycles batteries is IKEA, and it's a half hour away. Oh well, if it's between keeping my little one quiet, calm and entertained or killing the environment, sorry planet. Mamma needs to keep her sanity somehow. I could keep going and going but time to go feed the munchkin. At least his bottles (when he occasionally uses them) are BPA free. Also, he produces tons of natural gas. Maybe someday we'll be able to collect said gas and use it to make our cars run. "running on natural gas" organic cotton onesie from Old Navy June 22 Milestonesby Sharon I've never been very good at scrapbooking or journaling so before I forget some of the exciting things Jamie accomplished this past week, I figure I'd better write them down. Who knows, maybe someday I'll even write them in his baby book. Jamie at 9 weeks is: 9 lbs, 6 oz (almost double his birth weight) 22.25 inches tall (95% percentile for his adjusted age, WHOO HOO!). Able to hold his head up on his own for almost 10 seconds. Sleeps around five consecutive hours at night. His longest stretch so far, from 11pm to 5:15am. Has outgrown most of his preemie clothes and is almost too long for his bassinet. Can roll from his tummy to his back (or so Daddy claims. Mommy has yet to see him do it). No longer poops at every diaper change. We're down to a dirty diaper every other to every third day. If you're a parent you understand how wonderful this is. Smiles at Mommy and Daddy and can follow us with his eyes when we move around the room. Has started actually playing with his toys instead of just staring at them. There is a little bear that hangs from the top of his swing that he likes to try and grab. Has taken two airplane trips and has many more booked for the upcoming months. Our travel plans thru the end of the year include a drive up to Vancouver, numerous trips to see both sets of grandparents and a trip down to Mexico City to meet my extended family. June 19 Jamie Goes to the Desertby Sharon Last week, we took a spontaneous trip to the desert. "Junuary" as the news people are calling June, has been horrific and we desperately needed some sun. The Thursday we left it was actually colder here, 46 degrees F, than it was in Siberia! NO JOKE. Since we were already going to be in SoCal, we decided to make a few quick detours so Jamie could meet his great grandparents. Great Grandpa Fred, Jamie, Matt Jamie, Great Grandpa Fred and Great Grandma Illeene (uncle Jeremy is bbq'ing in the background) Jamie and Great Grandma Lillian We also detoured by the Ralph and Patti Spada's in Lakewood for a quick lunch and to introduce our babies. They were due three weeks apart but both decided to make early appearances... Grace was born on May 24th. Future Trojans, Jamie and Grace with their daddies For MUCH better pictures, check out Patti's blog. Also be sure to check out the latest photo album - it includes pictures of Matt's first Father's Day and Jamie's time in La Quinta. June 12 8 weeks old!by Matt
Don't forget to scroll down the pages and see some of the new videos Jamie posted on the site! In his spare time, he's been exploring the rain forest and battling giant killer whales!
